Tips for Finding A Job During A Pandemic

October 7, 2020

Many Arizonans are finding themselves laid off or furloughed and looking for employment. Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona has been helping job seekers during the pandemic.  We are offering career services online through MyCareerAdvisor.com, by phone and in person at their Career Centers.

Below are some tips to help if you’re being impacted by a furlough or layoff:

  1. Don’t panic – it can be jolting to get this news but know that there are resources available to help you.
  2. Stay positive! Layoffs due to COVID are not a direct reflection of your abilities.
  3. Update your resume. Our team can help you reformat or update your resume. We can teach you how to incorporate keywords that fit the company’s description and requirements.  We can also give you advice for how to address gaps in your resume.
  4. Attend a virtual hiring event. Goodwill and other companies are holding virtual hiring events right now. Dress professionally and have your resume ready to send off to hiring managers at the conclusion of the event. Watch our calendar of events or social media pages for information about upcoming virtual hiring events.
  5. Talk with family and friends. Share with them what types of positions or industries interest you. Follow up with recruiters and hiring managers you met at virtual events or connect with in person.
  6. Practice your interview skills.  Goodwill can help you get prepared with mock interviews in person or over the phone. We’ll practice sample interview questions and answers with you.
  7. Learn a new skill. Goodwill has several computer and soft skills training courses to help you obtain the skills you need to land your next job.  You can take the courses online at your convenience or at one of our Career Centers.  Many of the hiring companies are tech related positions, so now is a great time to brush up on your digital skills.

Goodwill provides no-cost career services for anyone seeking employment or a higher-paying job. We offer job seekers the tools and resources to feel confident, purpose-driven, and successful. Goodwill’s My Career Advisor is the best place to start if you’re planning for the future. Signing up is quick, easy, and free.
