5 Tips to Help You Navigate a Hiring Event

Attending a hiring event is a great way to gain exposure to companies that are hiring. A typical hiring event features many companies within the same industry that have multiple open positions. Many companies will even host their own hiring event if they are needing to fill multiple positions in a short amount of time. The face-to-face time with companies that are actively hiring is invaluable for job seekers.

Attending one of these events can be overwhelming. Follow these tips to help you navigate your next hiring event and you’re sure to land a job interview or two.

  • Research ahead – Check online to see if the event has a website or social media event page. If a list of companies is posted, take advantage of the opportunity to research the companies ahead of time. Rate your top five companies and visit those first when you get to the event. This even allows you to create tailored resumes for the positions and companies that interest you.
  • Dress up – Many companies have adopted a casual dress code, but this doesn’t mean you should dress casually. You will probably see other attendees who are dressed in everyday clothes. This is where you can stand out. Business casual attire is appropriate, but take it up a notch by wearing a tie or a blazer. Send the message that you mean business and you’re ready to land your dream job.
  • Bring resumes – Compile a portfolio of freshly printed resumes that you can bring to the event. If you’re choosing to create tailored resumes that are unique to specific jobs that you’re interested in, make sure those are labeled with a sticky note that you can easily find and peel off. A tailored resume is one that features keywords and accomplishments unique to a specific job posting.
  • Clean up your social media – Believe it or not, some companies may ask to follow you on social media. If you have a social media profile, make sure it doesn’t have any inappropriate photos or political views. It’s also a good idea to revise your LinkedIn profile. Make sure your photo is current and your job information matches your resume.
  • Remember names – When introducing yourself, get ready to remember the name of the person you’re meeting. After the person says their name, say it three times in your head. If it feels natural, working their name into your conversation is another way to help you remember it. At the end, thank them for their time and say their name again. This is an easy way to help you stand out among other candidates.
