Fall is here! And after a hot summer of wearing clothes that keep us cool, I love how we’re able to get more creative with layers. Soon we’ll be breaking out the jackets, jeans, scarves and boots. But your budget shouldn’t take a hit when you want to refresh your wardrobe for the new season. All you need is a little inspiration and the motivation to hunt for some hidden gems. As a stylist who is all about versatility and shopping on a budget, Goodwill is one of my favorite places to find these transitional pieces.
One of the best things about shopping at a thrift store is you can find unique items not everyone has. Wearing pieces that aren’t off-the-rack will make your original style stand out. It’s so fun to receive a compliment from someone and say, “Thanks, I got it at Goodwill!”

Head to Goodwill with a mental checklist of what you’re looking for. If you’re on the hunt for designer brands, don’t be afraid to shop off-size or venture into the men’s section. Even if you don’t find designer tags, look for quality items. Many times, fabric and fit mean more than the name on the tag.
Layering is a big part of fall fashion too and when it comes to wearing layers, you don’t always need to buy your true size. For example, you can find oversized flannel shirts and sweaters by looking for sizes a tad bigger than your own.
Sweaters
Fall is all about being cozy and who doesn’t love a soft sweater? An oversized knit sweater looks great with jeans and boots. It’s also a staple for lounging at home on the weekends. Look for neutrals, browns and olive green tones.
Boots
Tall boots under a midi skirt is my current go-to look for fall. Over-the-knee boots are also perfect for dressing up jeans. If you can score a quality leather pair at a thrift store, you’ll love them even more.
Blazers
Blazers are a great fall workplace staple and they make it easy to dress up an outfit. You can also transition your summer dresses to fall by pairing them with a blazer. This season I’m loving ones that come in gingham or herringbone prints.
Jackets
You’ll be surprised at the designer jackets you can find at a thrift store. If you’ll be visiting somewhere with snow this winter, a puffy insulated jacket is a must. Trench coats and leather jackets are also fun to wear in the fall. When shopping for jackets, look for ones with a mix of style, comfort and function.
Jeans
Wearing jeans during an Arizona summer is not very much fun, but jeans in the fall are essential. Look for a comfy pair of dark jeans that you can tuck into boots. There are so many to choose from at Goodwill, you’re sure to find a pair that works for you.
I hope these tips inspire you to go on the hunt for fall clothes at your
neighborhood Goodwill. Happy shopping!
